102 Life Cycle Mosquito prevention and control involves a basic understanding of their life cycle. A mosquito life cycle has 4 stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult - the whole cycle can take as little as four days or as long as one month, counting on species and temperature - All mosquitoes must have water for his or her life cycle

- Most eggs hatch within 48 hours Mosquito Control and Prevention the simplest thanks to control mosquitoes is to get rid of potential laying sites Remove any sources of standing water

- Add drainage holes to stuctures or containers which will trap water (barrels, old tires)

- Change or circulate the water in pet bowls and birdbaths a minimum of once every week - Fill tree holes with sand, mortar or place drainage holes to prevent standing water

- Clean roof gutters to stop them from becoming clogged and holding water

- Properly eliminate all trash, especially anything that could stand up Keep weeds and other vegetation mowed and trimmed to attenuate shelter for adult mosquitoes For areas with ponds, consider stocking mosquitoeating sh Control of mosquito larvae

- the utilization of larvacides may be a consideration, but should only be used as a supplemental measure

- Use only larvicides approved to be used in your area; Check with your local extension o ce of department of pest management for an inventory of approved pesticides

- don't apply pesticides to moving water (i.e. streams)

- Always read and follow all label directions - Non-chemical pesticides (e.g., Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) could also be an option

• Methoprene products are often wont to treat areas that collect water, like bird baths, urns, old tires, ower pots, abandoned swimming pools, etc.

Control of Adult Mosquitoes - this is often the smallest amount e cient thanks to control mosquitoes

- Special equipment is required to use pesticides to kill adult mosquitoes (adulticides); small droplets are produced that drift through the air and get in touch with adult mosquitoes to kill them

- ask your local extension o ce or department of pest management to work out which pesticides are approved to be used in your area

- the utilization of pesticides should only be supplemental to controlling mosquitoes through the reduction and management of mosquito laying sites

- Pyrethrin or 5% malathion are often fogged outdoors; Follow all label directions

- Contact your local county agent for assistance in developing a mosquito management plan Personal Protection

- Avoid being outdoors during prime mosquito biting times (dusk, dawn) - Use insectifuge containing DEET, Picaridin or Oil of lemon-eucalyptus [NOTE: DEET are often toxic to companion animals, so shouldn't be used on pets]
